The New Zealand Stoic Society is a community dedicated to the study and practice of Stoicism in a spirit of respect, inclusivity, and philosophical curiosity. By becoming a member or participating in our activities, you agree to uphold the Code of Conduct of the Society.

1. Scope

This Code applies to all members, officers, volunteers, contractors, speakers, and guests at any Society activity or space, including meetings, events, retreats, online platforms (e.g., website, forum, social media, video calls), and any setting where a person represents the Society.

2. Respect and Kindness
  • Treat all members with dignity, courtesy, and goodwill.

  • Disagreement is welcome, but hostility, personal attacks, or harassment will not be tolerated.

  • Listen actively and allow space for all voices to be heard.

3. Inclusivity
  • We welcome people from all backgrounds, cultures, identities, and beliefs.

  • Discrimination, exclusion, or derogatory behaviour of any kind is unacceptable.

  • Strive to create a supportive and respectful community for all participants.

4. Stoic Spirit
  • Approach discussions with openness, humility, and a willingness to learn.

  • Apply Stoic principles—reason, virtue, and self-control—in interactions with others.

  • Reflect on your words and actions in light of Stoic values.

5. Integrity
  • Be honest in communication and respect differing perspectives.

  • Do not misrepresent the Society or use membership for personal gain without explicit consent.

  • Uphold the Society’s reputation through responsible and ethical conduct.

6. Safe Environment
  • Meetings, online spaces, and events should remain constructive, safe, and welcoming.

  • Raise concerns or report incidents respectfully to organisers or the Committee.

  • Cooperate with organisers in maintaining a positive environment.

  • Online moderators may remove content or mute to keep discussions constructive.

7. Accountability
  • Breaches of this Code may result in limits on participation, suspension, or cancellation of membership at the Committee’s discretion.

  • Members are encouraged to reflect on their behaviour in light of Stoic principles before conflicts escalate.

  • Accountability extends to both in-person and online interactions.

8. Privacy & Integrity
  • We collect only what’s necessary, restrict access, retain for a set period, and comply with the Privacy Act 2020.
  • We disclose conflicts of interest; do not use roles for personal gain; do not endorse usage of our logo without Committee approval.
9. Shared Purpose
  • Remember that the Society exists to encourage study, dialogue, and the practical application of Stoicism for the benefit of all.

  • Strive to act in ways that foster collective growth, learning, and the wellbeing of the community.

By participating in the New Zealand Stoic Society, you agree to uphold this Code of Conduct and contribute to a respectful, thoughtful, and virtuous community.
