“You have power over your mind, not outside events. Realise this, and you will find strength.”

— Marcus Aurelius, Meditations 12.36

The New Zealand Stoic Society

Timeless wisdom for modern life

Welcome

The New Zealand Stoic Society is a community dedicated to exploring and practising Stoic philosophy in Aotearoa. We believe that Stoicism, an ancient philosophy founded over 2,000 years ago, offers timeless guidance for living with wisdom, courage, and compassion in today’s world.

In an age of constant change, Stoicism offers a calm and steady voice. It reminds us that while we cannot control external events, we can always govern our thoughts, choices, and actions. Through the practice of virtue, reason, and self-discipline, we can learn to live with integrity, resilience, and peace of mind.

Our focus is on philosophy as it is lived, not merely studied. We are a community of practitioners as much as readers, and we welcome thoughtful debate from across the philosophical tradition. Whether your interests draw you to Stoicism, Aristotelianism, Buddhism, Existentialism, or any other school of thought, you will find a genuine and open conversation here.

“To live a good life: We have the potential for it. If we learn to be indifferent to what makes no difference.”
— Marcus Aurelius, Meditations 11.16

Seneca on Sociability

A discussion on fellow-feeling and sociability, drawing on a passage from Seneca’s Moral Letters to Lucilius. We will explore why human connection matters, how the four cardinal virtues bear on Seneca’s words, and what it means to live according to nature. Small-group discussion, open to newcomers and long-time members alike.

How to Live Like a Stoic: A Practical Guide

An interactive workshop on turning Stoic principles into daily practice, from the moment you wake to the choices you face throughout the day. After a short introduction, small groups will work together to build their own practical guide to living like a Stoic, before coming back together to share ideas and insights. No prior knowledge of Stoicism is required, just curiosity and a willingness to reflect on how we can live more intentionally.
